What Is the Galleri Test?
Your health is our top priority at TREVI. Wouldn’t you want to get ahead of any cancer when it’s most treatable? Our practice now offers the Galleri test that can screen for a signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer—all through a simple blood draw.
How It Works
Our bodies are remarkably good at defending themselves. Did you know that we may have cancer cells forming every day and our bodies remove them? Some of these cancer cells are not effectively removed, and they can send out "signals" into the bloodstream. Some of these signals are shared by fast-spreading, aggressive cancers like pancreatic and ovarian that don’t show early-stage symptoms. The Galleri test is capable of detecting these cancer signals.
This is a revolutionary way to look for a signal associated with active cancer, and I am recommending this test as one of those additional screening tools.
What Galleri Doesn’t Cover
The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers, and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. These include breast and prostate cancers. For breast cancer, we still recommend self-breast exams with mammograms. Prostate cancer is on the rise, so having your PSA level and digital rectal exams are still the tried and true method for screening.
There may be some false positive and false negative results, but there is nothing else out there capable of doing what this test can do.
Who Is Galleri For?
Recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those aged 50 or older. The Galleri test should be used in addition to—not in place of—routine cancer screening tests recommended by a healthcare provider.
Important Safety Information
Use of Galleri is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment. Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs, and symptoms. A test result of "No Cancer Signal Detected" does not rule out cancer.
